🖥️ WHO IS PHYL? 🖥️
I make websites because I want to. Not because a client is paying me, not because there's a business case, not because it'll look good on LinkedIn. I make them because the internet is supposed to be fun and somewhere along the way everyone forgot that.
I grew up with a BBC Model B and then an Acorn Archimedes A3000. Back then if you wanted the computer to do something, you typed it in yourself from a magazine. Line by line. No Stack Overflow. No ChatGPT. Just you, the machine, and a blinking cursor. If it broke, you fixed it. If it worked, you felt like a wizard.
WibbleNet is that feeling, in website form. Every page here is an experiment I thought of, built, and put on the internet because I wanted to see if it would work. Not because anyone asked me to. Not because it'll go viral. Because it's mine.

The internet was better when it was made by individuals, not corporations. Personal websites are an act of resistance.
If you built something and put it on the internet and one person enjoyed it, that was a success. You don't need a million users.
Comic Sans is not a crime. Whoever decided it was is the same person who made every website look identical.
The best ideas are the ones that make you think "that's stupid, but what if it worked?" — and then you find out.
A website that makes one person laugh is worth more than a perfectly optimised landing page that converts at 3.2%.
We should bring back webrings. And guestbooks. And under construction GIFs. We have lost something.
The BBC Micro taught a generation to code by making it unavoidable. We got worse at teaching computers the moment we made them easier to use without understanding them.
If your website needs a privacy policy longer than the actual content, something has gone badly wrong.
📼 THE ORIGIN STORY 📼
1980s
Phyl types BBC BASIC programs into a BBC Model B from a magazine. Some work. Most don't. Learns more from the ones that don't.
1989
Acorn Archimedes A3000 arrives. ARM2 processor. RISC OS. Feels like the future. It was the future, it just went in a different direction.
1990s
The web appears. Everyone gets a GeoCities page. The internet is chaotic, personal, weird, and brilliant. Peak internet.
2000s
The web gets "professionalised". Comic Sans becomes a punchline. Personal pages die. The soul leaves the room.
2010s
Everything becomes a platform. Everyone becomes a brand. The feed replaces the page. Dark times.
2026
WibbleNet is born. The BBC Micro is spiritually avenged. The internet gets a little bit weirder. As it should be.
